Snoring Surgery -Friend or Foe?

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Anyone afflicted with a snoring problem, or anyone who’s partner snores can vouch for the sense of desperation to make the snoring go away.

Of the variety of effective options available on the market today, including the very effective Snore Exercise Procedure, surgery should probably be the last resort, used only when all other options have failed.

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons.

While surgery can eliminate suffering in untold humans, surgery to end snoring can be not only expensive but also not very effective.

Snoring Surgeries Performed

CAPSO (Cautery guided Palatal Stiffening Operation)

This surgery will burn your palate to make it stiff in order to not vibrate. It also removes the tissue around the uvula.

  • This operation is not only expensive but it is:
  • Success rate is unpredictable..
  • Not only is it in an experimental stage, it also tends to cause:
  • Post operative pain and discomfort.

LAUP (Laser Assisted UvuloPlasty)
This surgery removes your uvula and other tissue that may or may not, be obstructive.
Some of the cons here are:

  • Dry mouth,
  • Changes to your voice (!!)
  • Pain in ears.
  • This surgery can mask deeper problems or lead to new complications.
  • The success rate is unpredictable.

UPPP (Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty)
This surgery attempts to expand you airways. As the name implies, your uvula, palate, and pharynx are all the target for this surgery.
Some of the cons:

  • This procedure have higher than normal risks for hemorrhaging, and there is the post op. infection risk.
  • This surgery carries the risk of speech defects. (!!)
  • and swallowing problems.
  • It is also expensive,
  • and if your problem is sleep apnea it will not help.

Before using such drastic and irreversible measures such as surgery to attempt to cure your snoring, much research should be done. Especially when there are low cost, safe and effective snore exercises with an exceedingly high cure rate.

Snoring Treatment -Easy And Effective!

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Do you know that about 23% of couples have serious issues with snoring? Finding an effective snoring treatment is usually high in the list of priorities! The biggest problem is not how irritating it can be to be woken continously by someone snoring, or to get an elbow in the midriff from a fed up spouse, the major problem is the effects of the sleep deprivation that results from being or sleeping with a snorer.

Sleep deprivation causes not only psychological and mental effects, such as irritability, poor concentration and focus just to mention a few, science has proven that our bodies age much faster, and tests done after sleep deprivation showed altered hormone production affecting our metabolism, including signs of pre diabetes that reversed after adequate sleep.

In order to be a smart shopper and find effective help for your, or your spouses, snoring it is important to understand what the CAUSES of snoring are.

Snoring occurs when the airways are partially blocked, or when the tissue around the airway is loose and untoned, allowing the tissue to vibrate. Think of a violin string. It vibrates, and it sounds. So it is in your throat.

Now, the blockages/vibrations/loose tissue can be from your tongue, your palate, muslces around your jaw, partial obstructions in your nose etc. Not addressing where the problem stems from will not yield results, which is why most snoring devices and remedies have only a small percentage of success.

What do we do when our muscles are flabby and lacking tone?

We Exercise them!

And that is exactly what Icelandic therapist Christian Goodman discovered. When he exercised the muscles around the airways, his chronic snoring went away.

We can train out throat and tongue as easily as any other body part. Easier, in fact. The exercises take only minutes per day.

Makes sense? Yes, ofcourse it does. When the tongue is no longer so slack that it enters your throat when you sleep, you won’t snore. Exercising the throat in just the right way will strengthen it, and the soft palate not allowing the soft palate to flop around, obstructing the air flow as you lay on your back.

Ready to to spend a few minutes per day to rectify the underlying cause of your snoring? Only you can decide, but you could be snore-free within a few weeks.

Snoring Causes -These Are The Most Common

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Snoring can have a number of different causes.
The cause of the sound itself is when air passes through tissue that vibrates. That can be the tongues or other tissue in the throat. Those who are overweight have an increased chance to be a snorer due to more loose tissue in the throat and behind the nasal passages.

Here are some common causes for snoring that you can affect:

Change your sleeping posture. Many who snore do so only when laying on their back. Sleeping on the side or belly can be all that is needed to stop snoring!

Use a specially designed exercise program to end your snoring! Yes, toning the tissues around the airway have dramatic effects on snoring

Lose weight. Being overweight dramatically increases your odds of snoring. Losing weight is not so easy as most of us know, much easier is to do simple snoring exercises to remove the snoring.

Stop smoking. Smoking creates nasal congestion which will increase snoring.

Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol is a relaxant, allowing muscles and tissues in throat and tongue to go soft and to vibrate. The result is a dramatic increase in decibel.

Snoring Remedies -A Look at What Works

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

In order to choose wisely amongst effective snoring remedies understanding some of the causes of snoring should be the foundation.

Snoring occurs when the tissue surrounding the airways vibrate as the air passes through.
What causes the tissue to vibrate for some and not for others?

Causes for Tissue to Vibrate and result in Snoring:

  • The tissue in throat may have lack of tone and close down when sleeping becomes deep.
  • The tongue is moving back into your throat when you sleep and block the air.
  • Jaw muscles carrying tension can put pressure on the upper airways.
  • The soft palate can get loose and flop around like sheets in the wind.
  • Muscle tension or muscle weakness around the breathing passage can put a pressure on it and make you snore. For instance muscles on the side of your throat, your neck, and even muscles in your shoulders.
  • Anything that builds up in your throat such as phlegm or irritation from allergens etc. can work as a barrier for your breathing passage.

Snoring remedies fall into a few categories.

  1. Preventing the person to sleep on their back.
  2. Adjusting the position of the neck/throat with special pillows with the idea that certain positions will prevent, or minimize the tissues to vibrate when the air goes through.
  3. Surgical. This is obviously your last resort. An operation to attempt to tighten or widen the part of the airway causing the problem. This could be the best option if there are physical abnormalities in the palate or nasal passages.
  4. Exercising and training the muscles around the airways. This is not only an easy snoring solution but it can last a life time. The exercises are easy and pleasant to do, requiring only a few minutes per day. For most, in less than 2 months their snoring can be greatly diminished or gone all together.
